An Interview With Suzi Kemp
Do you suffer for your art?
I suppose so yes. I am super critical of my work, and sometimes unfair to myself.
Have you always been creative?
I have always been creative, and always done illustration, before I realised what it was.
What’s the highlight of your career so far?
The highlight of my career was right at the beginning, when I sold my first painting which gave me the deposit to rent a room in London, and the adventure began.
How would you describe your style?
My illustrative style relies on hand-drawn linework , usually in ink. I then usually move to the computer and add digital colour, so that it’s really bright.
Is illustration the best visual language?
All visual languages are effective and powerful in their own way, but I would always say the use of colour can be a super great way to communicate

Which other living artists do you admire?
I admire everyone who is out there and producing work, in these tough times following your ambitions and heart is admirable!
What would represent happiness in illustration?
To draw happiness you’d have to use lots of tropical coloured gouache.
How would you illustrate Lady Gaga?
I would illustrate Lady Gaga with lots of thick black ink and neons.
