Meet Jo Cheung – An Illustrator : I like making collages simply because of the imperfections and the freedom to move the material around.
On Materials… When I make an image, I always start off with handmade collages and drawings. I like to work with material I have collected over the years; I hate throwing away paper! I also use stickers and sweet wrappers as well. I recently exhibited some new pieces of work for a group show called The Picture Show at The Coningsby Gallery. I decided to show some original pieces because this is how I normally make images before retouching them into Photoshop.
On Design… I like to plan out what I’m going to do, usually some quick sketches will do. Saying that though, the process of making the collage dictates what the final outcome will be. I like making collages simply because of the imperfections and the freedom to move the material around.
On Drawing…I draw a lot from photos I’ve taken out and about. Currently, I’m really into my detailed line drawings. I’ll spend quite a bit of time sketching out the details before inking it in using my favourite pens by Faber Castell. They’re so good!

On What Makes You Feel Alive…Doing things spontaneously and taking risks. I’m not afraid to make decisions that might be ‘wrong’ but why hold back? If I know I want to do something I’ll do it, otherwise I’ll regret not making that decision. As an artist, you need to push your boundaries such as trying out new ways of making images.
My plan at the moment is to go to Hong Kong and to teach English; I’ve always wanted to travel and now’s the perfect time to go. I know if I don’t go I’ll beat myself up about it.
On Inspirations… I love the Surrealist movement, places around London and nature.
