Student’s Thought From Free Range Exhibition: Artupdate Learning talks to Louise Newman

Louise Newman

What was the best thing about Fine Art Photography at University of Derby?

I feel the best thing about my course was how this was the first time throughout my education that I really felt like I learnt and that I could now express myself in a way I never have before.

What was the best brief you were given during your course?

I really enjoyed the brief ‘Scale’ where we had to create large-scale images, which started my obsession with printing large.

How much research was needed for each brief given to students?

The research that was necessary of us seemed like a lot but I quite enjoyed learning more about the history of photography or discovering new photographers.

The best thing about being an art student is?

Expressing myself in a way no one else may understand but for me I release all my insecurities, stress, happiness into my photographs. My latest work normally relates to my current mood.

What can’t you work without?

A light meter, I feel it is the best piece of equipment for any photograph.

What inspires you works?

Anything emotional, whether it is my emotion or someone else’s.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I hope to be well and truly involved in the art world and still be making photographs daily.

How would you describe your works ?

My work is emotionally led and driven mainly by past psychological states of mind, represented through self-portraits, narrative based still lives and landscapes.
